USE YOUR LOAF CENTRE FACING EVICTION

JOHN DE MORGAN | 20.08.2004 17:58 | Free Spaces | London | World

The squatted Use Your Loaf Social Centre in South London is facing eviction. After seeing off illegal attempts to heavy us out we were taken to court and `possession was granted to the alleged owners, Glen International, on Wednesday 18th August.

Our hopers had been raised slightly when we got an adjournment on Wenesady the 11th, as the Gken International witness statement was flimsy, short on facts and inaccurate. Judge Welshman in Woolwich Country Court was not impressed by their barrister and seemed to know of them - not surprisingly as we have been told they are in and out of the Court on a regular basis. We also made contact with other victims of Glen International who had seen our story on the net and turned up to weigh in, from them we got VERY interesting info on the company. Proof that the Thakrars are the owners. Facts and figures, plus it was funny to learn they never pay their solicitors. Thieves robbing thieves.
However a week later the crooks had got their act together, their witness statement contained more of what was needed and the Judge was not convinced by any of our arguments about the dodginess of Glen International. The shady Mr Barry Shelton, front man for the real owners, the Thakrar family of Woolwich, didn't turn up so we couldn't cross exmaine him on who really owns the place. Shame as he is by all acounts a crap witness. The Judge wouldn't allow for an adjournment for him to be called, accepting the bare statement that he was the president of Glen, though there was no evidence of when he was appointed - especially as the last time he was in court he wasn't 'President'. The fact that the place had been revealed to be a social centre obviously didn't go down well with Millud either.
So that's that. We have a few weeks possibly till the bailiffs come. No date yet. We will not leave quietly. We will be pursuing inquiries into the activities of the Thakrars and their stooges. We will get another place in the area if we can. Come on down to the Loaf for a Friday cafe while you can, or to help plan further activity. We'll go out singing and
dancing, kicking up our heels and thumbing our noses.

Also coming up: Saturday 21st August, 8pm: Acoustic music night. Sing your eviction sorrows away, bring instruments, voices, or ears to listen.
Wednesday 25th:, 7.30pm: Readings from writers night. Prose can set you free!

Saturday 28th August, 12.00 - 4pm: Loaf Open Day. Drop in, eat cakes, drink tea, chat about the future of the building, next moves, new buildings, the state of the world etc.

baliffs and pigs sent packing

27.08.2004 19:15

Well the dodgy baliffs did indeed arive bright and early:

two dodgy geezers one old one young both scum at the door at 7:50, coincidently arriving at the same time a possee of east london eviction sabs, the occupiers inadvertantly open the door thiking we were all together, the two hapless baliffs proceeded to try and bum rush the door, a pretty heavy struggle ensued, with no digs getting thrown but some serious knocking about, the younger baliffs getting his foot stuck in the door (and having it abused),

anyway

more possee arrived the baliffs walked and the cops arrived

while they were putting their thick heads together the door was open some crew went in to chill the fuk out and some possee came out so that there was about 25 people outside and maybe 10 inside

the builders were also floating about waiting to breezeblock the front of the building

its worth noting the builderz were from bulgaria and the nicest bunch in the cops baliff builder axis of evil, at worst they were working for the owners who are wankers but the builders were nice, even seen hugging a bemused squatter.

the best bit was when the older baliff had enough of scuffling was about to bak off and he got a pint off water poured over him

nice

followed by some mud

anyway

the cops and baliffs put their thick heads together came up with a plan namely the thickest looking cop asking if he could just come in

i mean for fuksake

he was promptly told to shve and asked how many sugars he wanted in his bumba clot blakelock tea

after some chatting and minor interaction with occupiers the cops balifs builders all legged

no doubt to return at a later date

the squat a cenre for social solidarity and remains open for a cafe type thing tonight

rsist every eviction

The shady Mr Barry Shelton

28.10.2006 21:17

The courts in Jersey have caught up with our dear old friend Barry Shelton.

The Jersey Law Reports, bearing in mind the only thing slower than a judge is a law reporter, have recently put online a judgment from the Royal Court, Jersey's Court of Appeal, from October 2005.

 http://www.jerseylegalinfo.je/Judgments/JerseyLawReports/Display.aspx?Cases/JLR2005/JLR050428.htm#0428_P55

Barry has been a very naughty boy.

Rumour has it that an English High Court judge might say some rather unpleasant things about dearest Barry early in 2007. Might not be too kind about the Thakrars either
