This week's show features stories from Radio Netherlands, China Radio International, the Voice of Russia, Spanish National Radio, and Radio Havana Cuba.
From Netherlands- The EU has created a position of "representative to the US," and they’ve chosen the former Prime Minister of Ireland. Greenpeace members have blocked the transport of coal to a powerplant in the Netherlands.
From China- China is increasing its number of nuclear powerplants. With the continued US sales of weapons to Taiwan, many are concerned with the militarization of the conflict with China. Iran has again rejected the US allegation that it was in any way connected to the 9/11 attacks. The Filipino hostage in Iraq was released and both he and the President of the Phillipines are thankful.
From Russia- As the International Atomic Energy Agency returns to Iraq, they say they will just finish up their report. Mass protests were held in Fallujah, where the US military destroyed a house they claimed was full of terrorists- the neighbors say the dead were civilians, mostly women and children. Then a commentary on the political and economic situation in Afghanistan, which has become the second largest producer of opiates in the past year.
From Spain- Donor nations pledged nearly a billion dollars to help rebuild Haiti, but much of that is in the form of loans that will further cripple the nation. Then several press reviews, covering the investigation into the March 11th train bombing in Madrid, the conflict between France and Israel, and the deteriorating situation in Palestine which could lead to a civil war.
From Cuba- Palestinians won strong international support at the UN, where the vote was 150-6 asking Israel to comply with the International Court of Justice and tear down the Wall. As the Pastors For Peace caravan to Cuba reentered the US, they were searched by 100 members of Homeland Security and the FBI. Mexico City's Human Rights Commission said that there are irregularities and flaws in the investigation into the questionable suicide of a leading human rights campaigner.
