over 250,000 people from all sectors of society marched through Hong Kong island's Wan Chai district district in protest against escalating repression from Beijjing. The march has become an annual event to commemorate the anniversary of the handover from Britain, since when seven years have now passed.
Major themes of the demo included voicing opposition to Beijing's plan to scrap Hong Kong's direct electoral system in 2007-08, as well as condemning the oppression and torture of followers of the Falun Gong movement, crackdowns on freedom of expression and the Internet, and deteriorating working conditions. Jiang Zemin and Chief Executive Tung Chee hwa were their major targets of the protestors' anger. Labour organisations and human rights groups were well represented, alongside thousands of ordinary Hong Kong citizens, from infants to the elderly.
