Every year on the White Sea in Russia -9 day old baby seals -are brutally slaughtered
in March/April for their particular type of fur.
Recently, after many years of campaigning, a meeting was held at the Russian Embassy
(facilitated by the then Lab Euro MEP Mark Watts) to discuss the ending of this
appalling cull.(Held on May 24th 2004)
The Russian Ambassador promised to take the issue up with the authorities in Russia
to seek a solution to it.
In order to maintain the pressure on Russia readers/activists are encouraged to continue
or start to write to the Russian Ambassador to express their concerns about this cull
and to demand that it be ended immediately.
Please ask for an acknowledement to your letters and to be kept informed as to progress
in ending the killing.
Letters to: His Excellency Mr Grigory B Karasin,

(Note: From 1991 to 2001 an average of 30,000 seal pups were taken EVERY year).

People may also like to lobby IFAW (the Intl Fund for Animal Welfare)and their Russian
wing as they are not currently campaigning on this-claiming lack of resources.
Their Russian office has not campaigned since 1999 apparently.(So lack any babysealcull
figures for 2002-4) Internationally the campaigns have been concentrated on the
Canadian sealcull.
Could not IFAW at least put up a separate ,but clearly marked ,webpage regarding the
situation in Russia for these babyseals ??? (and other culls too).
Plus could IFAW Russia at least try to get the figures out for the last few years and
monitor the situation-posting info as and when they get it ?
