The 1st of May in Berlin, as in previous years, saw street parties, festivals, demos and mobilisations against a planned nazi march take place. Many of these events resulted in clashes between police and others.
In total, well over 360 people were arrested, many were injured by the police, one of them seriously. There are reports that one person was run over by a cop van, several people were beaten when being arrested or during police charges, and one newspaper report suggests that the cops even ripped an earing from one prominent PDS (Socialist Party of Germany, and ex-DDR ruling party in a coalition with the SPD in Berlin) and broke the leg of another. Not good PR.
In total, atleast 95 people have been remanded in custody. They will remain there atleast until their next opportunity to appeal in around 2 weeks time.
Yesterday evening, around 100 people with a soundsystem held a noisy demo in front of the prison where they are being held, people chanted slogans demanding their release, read speaches about the prison industry, repression on 1st May in Berlin and the latest info about the trials taking place against those accused of taking part in the mobilisations against the G8 Summit in Genoa in July 2001. A lot of music was played through the soundsystem and the cops were very aggressive, not allowing people to stand on the road, despite the fact that the demo had been registered with the cops in advance. Huge chears from the prison could be heared.
