It is certainly an unimpressive aggression towards Thai chickens concerning the recent bird flu paranoia. Instead of going back to the ignorant sacrificial solution by slaughtering hundreds of thousands of lovely fowls, Thai Agricultural Ministry should be treating the chickens with antibiotics that our competent veterinarians advise. Viva la medical science. Modern science and international cooperation could assist in curing the ill animals which must be lower than what human intelligence can estimate. In fact poultry businesses in the UK and worldwide have fed antibiotics to the animals since the 1950s to increase the weight of chickens or to rid of bacterial exposure in chicks, while significantly reducing the lifespan of the poor little animals. Industry and pollutions further threaten all lives on this planet with new viruses and cancers.
Now humanity have progressed a bit more: massacre the animals consumed by our collective paranoia, not hunger or capitalist commercialism.
World governments’s ease in abusing the animal rights to life is appalling: (a) the EU and UK enthusiastically burned the possibly mad cows, oops not mad people, (b) Malaysia did bury pigs alive into hellish holes 2 years ago, (c) China culled hudreds of exotic civet cats in fear of the communist government’s probe into delicacy cuisines, and (d) in Burma stray dogs may be poisoned by the city council to please the elites’ eyes. The ministry ought to stop the horrible treatment of our fellow earthlings, two-legged chicken friends, and begin to demonstrate that we are a real developing nation with knowhow and healthcare accessible to all, including chickens.

Bird flu vaccine developed
11-April 2003
"A team of researchers - led by Dr Richard Webby, who graduated from Otago in 1999, and a colleague, both based at St Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, America - has rapidly developed a vaccine for a deadly Hong Kong bird virus and human killer."
"Using samples of the influenza from Hong Kong, they mixed two genes from the virus with six genes from another virus inside a cell. This modified the virus genes to "abolish its ability to cause disease and therefore made it safer to use as a vaccine", the statement said. The virus has been sent to Atlanta and London for testing in preparation for human trials."

OOPS! : Vaccine helps to mutate Bird flu?
11 February 04
..."In 2003, scientists who developed an improved flu vaccine for poultry, including Robert Webster of St Jude's, concluded that such vaccination "may be a serious problem for human pandemic preparedness" (Virology, vol 314, p 580). Such vaccines, they wrote, might mask disease signs while allowing the birds to continue to shed virus. In such a case, "persistence of virus infection in the presence of a flock immunity may contribute to increased virus evolution".

So it has become widely accepted that vaccines are developed
and then the flu mutates into a new more virulent form...
ad infinitum?
are scientists who know the consequenses of
introducing vaccines to strong strains...
really making politically useful bio weapons ?

Biological macromolecules, such as proteins or nucleic acids, could be directly attached to
these structures and their reactivity directly monitored and controlled. Specific micro-sensors
for glucose or cholesterol could be created for blood monitoring. Antibodies could be attached
for sensing of particular metabolites for pharmacological dose monitoring or even for detection
of biowarfare agents. Additionally, this may have eventual application to chemical or
biochemical logic devices where reaction states can be switched and monitored in parallel.
This can also be useful for directed, in-situ microsynthesis. Libraries of chemical compounds
could be constructed and functionally assessed enabling, for example, rapid drug discovery,
materials research, or advanced catalyst development.

In the event of a biological attack, the U.S. will need to identify those who have been exposed to a biological warfare agent and to distinguish them from the “worried well,” as well as from those with natural diseases that might require different treatment. Therefore, identifying disease markers that can serve as rapid indicators of exposure is one of the focus areas of the Advanced Medical Diagnostics program. One group at Stanford University is looking for genetic markers by testing human cell cultures exposed to a variety of infectious disease agents and other stimuli. In FY 2000, the researchers identified a number of human genes that are selectively turned on or off in response to infection, and in FY 2001, they are testing for these markers in clinical settings such as hospitals.

Flu vaccine to change next year
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Big News Network.com Thursday 19th February, 2004
The World Health Organization recommended changing two of the three strains of virus to be used in next season's influenza vaccine in the Northern Hemisphere.
In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration is expected to adopt the changes on Thursday, when a two-day meeting on the issue concludes, the New York Times reported Wednesday.
Influenza vaccine comprises three strains. The selection is based on findings from the W.H.O.'s influenza monitoring network, which gathers information about the strains of the virus circulating around the globe.
Most influenza vaccines are prepared in hens' eggs. The choice has to be made at this time of year because it takes months to adapt the virus for growth in the eggs.
Next season's vaccines for the United States are expected to include the Fujian strain. The Fujian strain will replace the strain known as A/Moscow.
Next season's vaccine will also substitute the B/Shanghai strain for the B/Hong Kong strain. The new vaccine will still include the A/New Caledonia strain.

Holland had Bird Flu last year ..
19.02.2004 21:27
but i was told that it is forbidden to take chickens anywhere, heavy fines and shit due to chicken flu .
Oh says I, soon forgot that idea , But I never heard much about the desease in europe although it was supposed to be rampant in Holland and Belgium at the time. There has been plenty of coverage about the out break in asia but I never once heard any one mention the fact that it might have come from europe and i never heard about large scale slaughter over here or in fact anything at all I imagine everyone is still munching away on their chooks, i'm a vegetarian . Does anyone know how wide spread the chicken flu was /is in europe ???
I can imagine why it was hushed up..
