The latest Shortwave Report (February 6) is up at the website http://www.outfarpress.com/outfarpress/shortwave.shtml in both broadcast quality (13.2MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (3.3MB) (29:00)
This week's show features stories from China Radio International, Radio Netherlands, the Voice of Russia, Spanish National Radio, and Radio Havana Cuba.
From China- China is refuting a British news report that there are human cases of avian influenza in Mainland China, though there are a growing number of cases in S E Asia. Kentucky Fried Chicken is China’s most popular fast food, but will they have to start serving fish as they do now in Vietnam?
From Netherlands- The Basque separatist movement ETA, which is banned in Spain, has threatened renewed terrorist actions. The twin suicide bombings in Iraq last Sunday were aimed at Kurdish organizations- will this stimulate a resurgence of a call for a Kurdistan?
From Russia- A news piece and 2 commentaries from the VOR. In 2003, 50% of Afghanistan’s income was from its growing opium trade, and Russia doesn’t want it on its streets. The just resigned head of the BBC says that the British government applied severe pressure on the reporting of the war on Iraq. A Norwegian Parliamentarian has nominated Bush and Blair for the Nobel Peace Prize.
From Spain- Several press reviews covering the investigations in the US and Britain into the justification for invading Iraq. The Peruvian President Toledo has a 7% popularity rating in an expanding corruption scandal. There was an attack on Indigenous leaders in Ecuador for their anti-globalization stance. Cuba says the US is planning to execute Castro. United Nations officials are worried about the millions of people fleeing violence in Colombia, the largest humanitarian crisis outside of Africa.
From Cuba- First a Viewpoint on Bush’s increased military budget on Colombia. Israeli nuclear whistleblower Vannunu is about to be released from 18 years in jail, and the government plans to keep him silent. A top British Intelligence official revealed that none of the British experts backed the prewar claims of Tony Blair.
All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.
This program will be aired on Friday evening at 7pm on KZYX/Z Philo CA, you might be able to stream via http://www.kzyx.org
There are several other streams that work better- http://www.freakradio.org Freak Radio Santa Cruz (96.3fm) now streams this program on Friday at 9:30am (PST)
Also check out LavaLamp Radio (Japan)- http://www.radiolavalamp.org
streaming the SWR, check out the schedule.
And the Partytown streams are great and informative- http://www.partytown.com/radio
I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station. I am still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I put into this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated. Any stations rebroadcasting this (or listeners) are welcome to donate for production costs. You can do so through the website. Many thanks to those that have donated! No Guilt!
