GM SCIENTIST MEETS BIOTECH BAKING BRIGADE

Paul Rylott, the top GM Scientist of Bayer Cropscience was pied at a conference in London

On 21st January Paul Rylott - top GM scientist at Bayer Cropscience delivered a stirring speech on how to manage consumer response to biotechnology, at a conference on Managing and Predicting Crisis in the Food Industry. As he took his place in the queue for his buffet dinner a polite call of "Mr Rylott?" brought him face to face with a chocolate fudge cake (skipped and stale) covered with the sweaty rotting whipped cream and the shout "That's for GM!" Before the assualting party fled.
Some leaflets were given out to the surprised and immobilised crowd and all those protesting left before the cops arrived.
This is part of a national UK campaign against Bayer and against GM commercialisation. Actions taken place have included junk mailing, sabotage including lock glueing, spraypainting, window breaking, golf courses destroyed , office occupations, noise demonstrations and trespasses.
The biotech baking brigade stated: " GM Technology is the latest onslaught of a bland and tedious industrial technological society against the planet. We are against monoculture and for biodiversity, against the domestication of people and land, and for the wild. There is no neutral ground: everyone is called upon to choice their side. Whenever They strike - be they government, corporations or greenwash quangos - we will strike back. They have declared war on us and our planet: we will answer it.

nice action...shame about the report

22.01.2004 15:52

um...yeah, well I can't think of anyone else who deserves it more, but the tone of the report sounds like a communique from the red army faction - you just pied someone, not blown up the houses of parliament. As for everyone must 'choose a side' - sounds like you've employed bush's speech writer - 'you're either with us, or against us'.

I would of considered the report in a humourous fashion, if it were not for the history of previous over-wrought, self-regarding bayer reports.

What's on her plate?

nice action - shame about the report

response to "nice article shame about the report": thanks for the comments and point taken - partly. I think what the Biotech Baking Brigade are trying to do - and maybe some of those other reporters of anti-Bayer actions - is to move away from a lot of the language that campaigning against GM has suffered from for the last 6 years: things like "Frankensteins Food" and "Consumer Concern". Whilst some people who are resisting GM may well be doing it for those reasons, many of us aren't. Personally I dont give a fuck about clear labelling or consumers rights or health concerns. That seems very narrow to me. It is for some of us (not that i want to speak for anyone else)part of the history of complete control and conquering. And if the language of war rather than humour is used then I think - for me anyway - this is far more appropriate. I dont want the directors of corporations to be laughing, I want to be dancing on the ruins instead. However it is really hard to explain this particular struggle from a green anarchist perspective in a way that is easy to read and understand, and I do accept that it might not be as easy to read or understand as more common speak.
Finally though, those who do the actions are at liberty to report them how they want, no? You, campaigner, are free to report them as you will.

Who ate all the pies?

S'all good.

But if he really WAS "face to face" with the fudge cake, why's it all down the back of his neck??

Nice to see you saddos continue to self delude. Not much sign of interest from anyone else though. Strange that. See you're too cowardly to print your chums picture. Print this if you have any spine.

nice...

23.01.2004 13:49

nice one all involved...this no doubt took forethought, planning, no little daring and a sense of humour. I wonder if Rudolph could manage any of those? Or is he (I presume it's a 'he') sat at home rubbing his red nose? Apparently it takes more courage to stand up to the ridicule of indymedia readers than to infiltrate a corporate event and take non-violent direct action with the risk of arrest, being charged with assault, and being gaoled. What other courageous things did you do today? Buy The Daily Mail? Make a cup of Nescafe? Pull on your GAP chinos? I bet life's a riot up there with Donner and Blitzen.
(I don't normally respond to trolls, but fish in barrels and all that)
Have you ever considered the (some would say revolutionary) meanings behind these pie-ing actions?
Capitalism can take almost anything except humiliation (see Laugh In actions e.g. against Monsanto in India)
It could have been anything stuck in his face (including something lethal, this makes them slightly wary)
It backs up the other aspects of a concerted campaign (hence the references in the posting) and makes it 'poysonal'
It gets some publicity (including no doubt in his own company, where he will be a figure of fun for some weeks)

Great action!

Keep up the militancy! Genetic Engineering is a folly of the modern age! 'red brigade' type statements are excellent! - energetic- direct- uncomprimising! It would have been much funnier though, if you had kidnapped and executed Paul Rylcott!

No GM

the answer

29.01.2004 13:16

In regard to some of the questons below I think that a good analysis of the picture can provide some answers.

1 The woman in the back, with the plate.
Well it is obvious that she is the one who smuggled in the back-up pie. The disguise is great, she blends in perfectly. Timing is also right, she has her pie ready, immediately after the initial pie attack and has positioned herself close to the likely escape route of the target. If the target choses to make a run for it he will have to face the backup-pie ready and waiting. The man in the background just got rid of the second backup pie. Because of the distance he was armed with a long range muffin. You can clearly see that he has a some trouble stuffing it, but with the right mind set you can do extraordinary things!

2 Where did the pie go?.
If you take a good look, you can see the smile on the face of the guy on the far right, making his way out of the crowd. It was him who licked everything of Rylott’s face. His usual job is kissing his butt of course, but the picture clearly states the there was nothing wrong with the pie and he did enjoy this new line of work. According to him Rylott can’t be pied to often!

By the way, to the prson who said that he should be kidnapped, his name is rylott not ryclott!!
If you knew him then you would know otherwise.
You are just too full of yourself to know better!!!
