London Action and events
11.07.2003 15:37
There was a picket of the Greek National Tourist Office and state-owned Olympic
Airways Conduit Streetin London's West End from around 12.30 to 7pm. The people at the tourist board were sympathetic, unlike the cops who appeared rapidly from West End Central cop shop (including a chief inspector and some other top rankers!) to hassle people including the tourist board who they insisted shut down for the day!!. More info and pics later.
Greek embassy pickets also every saturday afternoon in London. Talk about cop overkill on the first one - there must have been 10 TSG for everybody demonstrator.
Every Friday in London there is a Thesaloniki prisoner support benefit at Eton Misson Social Club, 91 Eastway, Hackney Wick.(next to the church) 8pm - 6am. Details on The Indymedia calendar. Pics and also (possibly)downloadable flyers/posters coming soon.

Thessaloniki Prisoners Solidarity Action in London

Thessaloniki Solidarity Action, London - Pic 1
Thessaloniki Solidarity Action, London - Pic 2
Around 25 people blocked the entrance of the tourist office for about 3 hours. Police presence was small comparing to other recent solidarity actions in London, although the ever present and (in)famous police Forward "Intelligence" Team, turned up with a photographer that made sure he got as many snaps of those involved in the action as he could.
Protesters gave away leaflets to people passing by, explaining the reasons of the action and pointing out the case of Simon Chapman, a London activist arrested and badly beaten by police during the protests at the EU summit in Thessaloniki. He is now in remand in a Greek jail waiting for his case to go to court. Simon faces between 7 to 25 years in prison due to false evidence planted on him during his arrest by Greek riot police. Evidence of this can be seen on the following links:

http://www.enrager.net/simon.htm
and the others is on the wombles site, but I forget the link to the page: http://www.wombles.org.uk/
