more about the noborder demo in Warsaw
03.07.2003 16:37
Over 100 people from countries including Poland, Czech republic, Ukraine, Germany, USA, Canada, Belarus participated in the action.
Participants oppose the tightening of border regulations and see the visa regime as a new Iron Curtain.
The demo began in Warsaw at midday and they marched from Washington Station over the Poniatovsky Bridge. There were short speeches in Russian and Polish and the crowds were warmly received. Traffic on the right hand side of the road on Poniatowsky bridge was brought to a halt as protesters chanted slogans including: “No borders for the free” “No man is illegal” “No to a new iron curtain”.
Anarchists shouted slogans in Polish, Polish, Czech, Finnish and English! One of their most favoured slogans in all these languages being: “Open the borders! Close down the prosons!” The police tried to keep the demonstrators off the road and on the pavement , and tried to block the way, but failed to impose their order on the protesters on the bridge. They had more success on 3Cross Square where they halted the demonstration for an hour.
16 people were arrested: among whom: Ukrainians, Germans, Americans, Finns, Lithuanians, Russians and other anarchists. 30 people from a support put pressure on the police by maintaining a presence at the scene of arrest and later at the station. Each person arrested will be fined 50 zlatys for highway obstruction.
