"Trading Freedom" Film Screening

Scots against the FTAA 8 pm, Sunday 8 February @ the Forest Cafe, 3 Bristo Place, Edinburgh

8 pm, Monday, 9 February, venue changed to Mono Cafe, 12 Kings Court, King Street, Glasgow, G1 5RB

"Trading Freedom: the secret life of the FTAA" offers an explanation of the Free Trade Area of Americas, a proposed economic zone that will regulate the economic activity of one-sixth of humanity, overriding local democracy in favour of "rights" for multinational corporations throughout the Americas. This film is the story of those who resist - indigenous struggles, working-class organizations, women in rebellion, media activists, and a huge network of NGOs.

"Footage from Chiapas, Quebec City, Sao Paulo, Akwesasne and Tijuana, plus the combined efforts of over 100 videographers, photographers, free radio outlaws, writers, editors, techs, and rabble-rousers make this the perfect evening out." -- Luther Blisset

The film is presented by the film maker from Cambridge Imc and by the Edinburgh Chiapas Solidarity Campaign, Indymedia Scotland, the Camcorder Guerillas, and the Glasgow Chiapas Solidarity Group.

In addition there will be a screening of "Voice of the Voiceless" - a documentary film about Radio Insurgente and footage from the latest FTAA protests in Miami.

Double Standards

Israel's terrorisation of the Palestinian people have obviously driven the Palestinian people to the edge of despair. The hatred thus engendered is multiplied by the record of Western politicians who so often display double standards by demanding a condemnation of Palestinian terrorism while turning a blind eye to Israel's terrible crimes.

Two Otters shot on Skye

It is quite ironic that we have two laws to protect our wildlife but time and time again they cannot be enforced. Let me give you three examples in the last few months. The Eurasian Otter (Lutra lutra) is listed under Schedule 5 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and also the EC Habitats Directive implemented through the Conservation (Natural Habitats) Regulations 1994. These mean that it is an offence for any person to intentionally kill, injure or take otters.

And yet three otters have recently lost their lives through stupidity and deliberate criminal acts. The cases all involve otters from different areas which have been killed or wilfully taken from the wild.
