Glasgow City Council has, on the instructions of the Home Office, begun a programme of evictions of asylum seekers from their homes. Around 200 households who have been refused asylum have received notices and one evicted they will have no access to any public housing or council homelessness services, and no entitlement to any form of support whatsoever.
The most that people can rely on is a bowl of soup and a blanket from one of the local charity missions. These are people who have fled some of the most oppressive regimes in the world.
The government has cut off every avenue of support to vulnerable homeless refugees.Families are disappearing to avoid the immigration snatch squads who will incarcerate them in Dungavel if they get a hold of them. A whole community of people is being psychologically terrorised by the prospect of losing their basic human rights, their children, food, shelter, and the right to appeal a bad decision.
In responding to this humanitarian crisis, Positive Action in Housing has set up a destitution surgery and asked our networkd to refer destitute families. We have set up a register of people willing to give money or accomodation.
We need your help.
- Can you or someone you know offer a place to sleep on a week-by-week basis? It might be a bed space or a small box room. Whatever, so long as its safe and warm its fine. If you think you could put your name on the register, could you please call Clare or Nasreen on 0141 3532220 or email clare@paih.org
- Can you donate money to the hardship fund? You can make a one-off donation or contribute whatever you can afford. Every penny will go directly to individuals in need. Cheques should be made payable to Positive Action in Housing and the back of the cheques should be clearly marked "Hardship Fund".
- Contribute help in kind. Give Clare a call on 0141 3532220 or email clare@paih.org
We hope you can help and if you can we hope to hear soon from you.
