The Sumac Skillshare is back with monthly one day skillshare events around a theme. We kick off on January 31st with the Craft and DIY skill share.

'LOOKING INTO THE CRISIS' is a new audio-based initiative to help us explore and disseminate knowledge about current economic issues.

On Monday 20th October the annual AISEC Careers fair commenced at Nottingham University, featuring many organisations with despicable or at least dubious ethical credentials and social-responsibility records, including BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, Qinetiq, E.On, BP, RBS, MoD and the army. The fair also featured some student activists and Grim Reapers who had made an appearance in order to remind fellow students of the deadly consequences of working in the arms trade or climate change industry.

Yesterday, University and Colleges Union (UCU) members were on strike at Nottingham Trent University (NTU). Notts Indymedia interviewed the chair of NTU UCU, Brian Ward, to find out what's happening.

Hot on the heels of October’s 27th annual Anarchist Bookfair, this coming Tuesday sees the second Sumac Debate; a focus on anarchist politics and organising as we move into a phase of economic instability and increasing state control.

Yesterday Nottingham SU Council voted down a no confidence motion against racist Education Officer, Craig Cox. Cox held up a banner reading 'Bring Back Slavery' at an NUS meeting during the summer. In spite of a mass lobbying campaign, including a 60 strong picket of the council meeting, the vote for the motion fell well short of the two-thirds required to pass it.

Students gathered on Thursday to discuss the disgraceful action of Nottingham National Union of Students (NUS) Executive member Craig Cox who held up a sign saying "Bring Back Slavery" at an NUS event. The feeling was that this was a sad reflection on the ignorance and racism that exists in the university and that Cox must be removed from his position.

This month Matt makes us a lovely pasta dish with some garlic bread and we share stories from our community. Ali from the Bonsai project sings us three songs and Tinman plays tunes from locals Metaphi, C.Shamanic, Kamal and the Freakcullector. Sam brings us up to speed on her recent high seas piracy in Ireland, Tom gives us details of upcoming events in the Nottingham Student Peace Movement. Jacque recounts last months Sumac debate and gives us the details of future discussions. We get a description of the talk Roberto Perez recently gave which is now available to download from the Riseup site. We hear about the vegan skillshare and the free food giveaway in town. Finally Tinman puts in an idea about an energy saving inspired by his housemates.

A series of three open discussions was organised in Autumn 2008 by the Riseup! Radio project in Nottingham. These were hosted by the Sumac Centre. They were recorded to enable a wider audience to engage with political discussion and reflection on grassroots approaches to the problem of climate change in the UK.
