It has been reported in the press that at a National Union of Students (NUS) event this summer, Nottingham University Students' Union, Education Officer, Craig Cox, held up a poster saying 'Bring back slavery'. The NUS subsequently removed Craig Cox from the event following complaints from other student representatives present. Our Student Union officers attending NUS events are there to represent all Nottingham students. We believe that such behaviour is unacceptable and does not reflect our views.

The Centre for the Study of Social and Global Justice (Politics) and the Centre for Research on Identities, Citizenship and Migration (Sociology and Social Policy) are holding a round table event on Wednesday 1st October, 4-6 pm, in Law & Social Science Building, B62.

NSPM will be holding a regular free film showing at the University of Nottingham. Films will be shown every Friday night at 7pm in C11 in the Portland building.

The first of the Sumac Debates will take place at the Sumac Centre in Forest Fields, Nottingham, tomorrow evening. The State: Work with the Power is part one of a series of three discussions on Social Change and the Climate Movement.

The University and College Union branch at Nottingham Trent University is to ballot its members on strike action following the formal de-recognition of the local UCU branch by university managers.

A regular play space for practice, sharing, teaching + learning circus skills(and related ting like magic, propmaking, etc);is starting on Tuesdays, at the Sumac Centre.
This is open for all but especially for those opting out of school or work. There are much better things to do and this is one of them.

With news of a new restaurant (Vienna) on the Nottingham dining scene, and foie gras on the menu Nottingham Animal Rights were keen to make contact to discuss the realities of foie gras and our 'foie gras free Nottingham' initiative.

A day of practical skill sharing for food-based vegan campaigning,
from samples on street stalls, through food fairs, to running a small
vegan catering service.

Anyone interested in food campaigning, including supporters of Animal
Aid, Vegan Society, Viva, Vegetarian Society, Food Not Bombs, Climate
Campaigners, Eco Activists, Peace Campaigners and anyone working for
Social Justice will find this a valuable opportunity for networking
and the sharing of practical skills and experiences.

A program of talks and workshops designed to guide you from your first
tentative steps into food campaigning through to a more organised and

The Nottingham Animal Rights crew take great tasting vegan food to the masses and get the facts out about McDonalds. The overwhelming majority of the public are delighted by delicious food and more than slightly concerned by the dubious ethical practices of everybody's least favourite (alright KFC & Burger King, joint least...) fast food chain.

To promote Saturday's Viva! Veggie Roadshow, and as ever to promote veganism, members of Nottingham Animal Rights & Veggies distributed free vegan food and literature outside the council house.

Hosted by Nottingham Student Peace Movement, this event aims to discuss and respond to the violation of academic freedom, erosion of civil liberties and encroachment of 'terrorism' measures, as illustrated by the recent incident at the University of Nottingham.

On Wednesday 28th May at the University of Nottingham academic staff gave a public reading from an Al-Qaeda training manual, outside the Hallward Library, University Park Campus. The demonstration expressed the outrage amongst staff and students after two innocent members of the academic community were arrested under ‘terror’ legislation in connection with this document, downloaded from an official US government website.

On Wednesday 28 May, hundreds of students and academics came together at the University of Nottingham to protests in defence of academic freedom and against the imminent deportation of university community member Hicham Yezza.

As concerned academics at the School of Politics and International Relations at the University of Nottingham who have been involved in the campaign for academic freedom and the release of Hicham Yezza in the wake of the false terror arrests at our university last week, we request that the Registrar, Dr. Paul Greatrix, amends the statement that he is currently circulating in response to letters of concern sent by academics from across the world to the University of Nottingham. The statement contains a number of inconsistencies, and we feel it necessary to point these out, both to Dr. Greatrix, and to the wider public.

Nottingham Animal Rights, working in conjunction with Lincoln Animal Rights, will be holding events as part of the annual P&G day of action as organised by Uncaged Campaigns. The main focus of the day will be a stall, to spread the message that cruelty-free shopping isn’t just easy, but is the only choice, in the light of the incredible cruelty and suffering faced by animals at the hands of Procter & Gamble amongst others.

The University of Nottingham was recently voted the Number 1 "Most Vegetarian-Friendly UK University," in a poll conducted by Peta2, the youth wing of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). In achieving first place, Nottingham beat Glasgow University, which has Vegan Society accreditation, into second place.

According to Peta2, the university has been "working alongside Vegsoc – Nottingham University Vegetarian and Vegan Society." Alex Claridge, the society's social security was kind enough to answer a few questions about what the group have actually been doing.
