Sumac Craft and DIY Skillshare

Skill share | 12.01.2009 16:14 | Education

The Sumac Skillshare is back with monthly one day skillshare events around a theme. We kick off on January 31st with the Craft and DIY skill share.

The Skillshare has run free workshops at the Sumac for over a year based around practical skills that help people live more sustainable lives. It is a community project with all organisers and workshop-givers giving their time for
free.

This year we are introducing a discussion workshop on each skillshare day to talk about the issues around the chosen topic. These should be lively interactive discussions using popular education techniques to get them going and keep them interesting!

We will also be providing tea, cake, and a nutritious lunch for donations (this will help us cover the costs of the day).

All workshops are at the Sumac (245 Gladstone St, Forest Fields, Nottingham: for directions see  http://www.veggies.org.uk/sumac/map.html), and as always, free (although donations to keep it going are very welcome - and needed:-)). Most workshops you just turn up, but some are limited numbers so you need to book by emailing us or calling 07944889580.

The programme:

January 31st Craft and DIY skillshare programme:
Basic carpentry: 9.30 – 12.30. Limited numbers – please book!
Develop a range of carpentry skills to produce a window plant box out of old pallets.

Bricklaying: 9.30 – 12.30. Limited numbers – please book!
From frogs to pointing, learn basic bricklaying techniques.

Lunch: 12.30 – 1.30: A tasty vegan meal prepared by volunteer chefs will be provided.

Thinking about Stuff: 1.30 – 3.00
What do you think about consumerism? Why do Mums still do the sewing? This session is a chance to discuss the wider issues surrounding today's skill shares. Expect to think laterally and get involved!

What Rubbish? 3.15 – 5.45
Clever ways to utilise waste around the home – from rags to rugs - from tetra paks to tin roofs - a skillshare of ingenious invention and creation using only household waste. Bring along what you have and let’s see what
we can do!

Making your own natural paints: 3.15 – 5.45
Experiment with clay and natural pigments to create your own beautiful paints

Coming soon:
February 28th: 'You are the Sumac' skill share - a chance to discuss the politics behind the Sumac and where we are going, as well as skillshares to help you get those famous Sumac Skills such as Mass Catering and running a bar!
March 28th: Low energy solutions: from transport to power - learn to cut down on fossil fuels.

Please resize pics to 550 pixels width

12.01.2009 20:47

Thanks for publishing news on Indymedia. However, because we're still running a creaky old system we need posters to resize their pictures to a maximum 550 pixels in width before they publish them. I can do it through the site's admin but it would help if they were published the right size in the first place. You can download free software like GIMP that will help you to do it.

Cheers!
