11 years of torture, abuse and arbitrary detention
The current hunger strike at Guantánamo Bay, now in its 11th week, turned nasty at the weekend, when new orders were issued to separate prisoners, resulting in an invasion of their cells and plastic bullets being fired at prisoners allegedly putting up resistance, in spite of being weakened after 11 weeks without food. Their lawyers report that some have lost over 30lb in weight in that time and the US Defense Department states that at least 13 are being force fed. Nearly all the prisoners are on hunger strike. Most have been held without charge or trial for over 11 years with little prospect of release.

This protest which has led to force feeding against the human rights of prisoners and some prisoners losing over 15kg in weight was prompted by the confiscation of personal items from cells and the desecration of copies of the Koran. The situation is desperate, according to their lawyers, yet there has been no mainstream media coverage and little outcry from the international human rights NGO community. The London Guantánamo Campaign [1] regrets the decision of the American Supreme Court, on 11 June, to reject petitions from 7 Guantánamo Bay prisoners [2], held without charge or trial for over a decade, to challenge the basis of their detention. This comes in the same week as the 797th anniversary of the Magna Carta, on Friday 15 June, conferring the rights to a fair trial and habeas corpus [3], among others, for almost the past eight centuries. The court gave no reason for its decision to overturn this basic right it had earlier upheld.
The London Guantánamo Campaign will mark International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, on 26 June, with a vigil in Trafalgar Square at 6-8pm:

A Nato air strike has killed eight members of a family in the eastern Afghan province of Paktia, local officials say. A provincial spokesman said a couple and their six children died in an air strike on Saturday in the village of Suri Khail, Gurda Saria district. Nato says it is investigating the reports.
