Locks glued at IOM, Brussels

The IOM also promotes and carries out ‘voluntary’ returns, sending people back to countries of origin. In reality, these returns are anything but voluntary, as the alternative for people who don’t accept them is destitution, poverty, detention or forced removal. Through the IOM scheme people are coerced into leaving. As such, it is part and parcel of government's efforts to increase the removal of unwanted migrants and refugees from the country. Examples of recent IOM returns are to conflict areas such as North Iraq, Kosovo, Angola and Afghanistan. A primary function of the IOM is to help governments meet their deportation targets, regardless of the real dangers facing returning refugees and migrants.
The IOM is part of a system which creates divisions between people, and tries to control the movement of people to the benefit of the already rich and powerful.
