Locks glued at IOM, Brussels
x | 05.10.2010 11:50 | Migration
On Friday 1 Oct, the locks of the offices of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in Brussels, Belgium, were glued shut. This was one of many autonomous actions which happened last week in Brussels.
The IOM is an integral part of the repressive border regime, promoting messages and policies concerned with migration ‘management’ which supports the neoliberal economic system, at the expense of ordinary people.
The IOM also promotes and carries out ‘voluntary’ returns, sending people back to countries of origin. In reality, these returns are anything but voluntary, as the alternative for people who don’t accept them is destitution, poverty, detention or forced removal. Through the IOM scheme people are coerced into leaving. As such, it is part and parcel of government's efforts to increase the removal of unwanted migrants and refugees from the country. Examples of recent IOM returns are to conflict areas such as North Iraq, Kosovo, Angola and Afghanistan. A primary function of the IOM is to help governments meet their deportation targets, regardless of the real dangers facing returning refugees and migrants.
The IOM is part of a system which creates divisions between people, and tries to control the movement of people to the benefit of the already rich and powerful.
See bxl.indymedia.org for more reports from Brussels on actions against the border regime.
