Our Food - Where now ?

Dave | 26.02.2004 17:07

Where are we going with our food ?

SUPERMARKET CHALLENGE

The Countryside Alliance strongly believes that given accurate information the majority of shoppers would like to see greater support for the British producer and challenges the supermarkets to undertake the following:-

1. “Local-corners” should be established in supermarkets so that people can find food that is sourced from their local region.

Reduce food miles / better for the environment / support British producers / support smaller specialised businesses / reconnect farmers to their market / give consumers the opportunity to find out more. All credit to Waitrose for their new ‘Locally Produced’ range!

2. Customers should be informed as to where their food comes from.

Reconnect consumers to food production / influence consumer trends.

3. Farmers Markets could be held in the supermarket car park on a Sunday.

Visible proof that supermarkets want to support local people / all the benefits of a farmers market (local food, vibrant atmosphere, diversity of products etc)

4. People should be encouraged to eat British food, through marketing and attractive promotions.

Shoppers should be reminded that British food is subjected to the highest legislative welfare standards in Europe.

5. Supermarkets should join the campaign for a change in labelling laws, to better inform customers of the origin of their food. Shoppers should demand that this be the case.

Although we recognise this is a European issue, supermarkets could add considerably to the campaign by backing British farmers.

6. Supermarkets should have many more information points around each store to tell people about the issues.

Informed customers would demand British products.

7. Supermarkets should ensure that UK farmers receive a fair price realistically above the cost of production.

This is well known as ‘Fairtrade’ for many products coming from developing countries.

8. Supermarkets should provide evidence that they have attempted to source UK products wherever possible and publish a target for the % that they will try to achieve. Supermarkets should make a commitment to offer a British equivalent if there is one.

In support of British producers and the British countryside.

9. Special promotions should cover British products whenever possible

Particularly when ‘in season’.

10. Supermarkets should support the Game-to-Eat campaign.

An initiative to promote British Game run by the Alliance and co-funded by DEFRA.
