23rd November issue of Manchester Climate Fortnightly out
23-11-2008 21:29
Manchester Climate Fortnightly is a newsletter published by a small collective in Manchester, covering all subjects related to climate change in the Northwest of England (and a few places beyond...)Below are some samples articles from the November 23rd issue. The rest of the newsletter, and previous editions, are available for download via the following link-
www.manchesterclimatefortnightly.info. You can also subscribe by emailing info [at] manchesterclimatefortnightly.info with "subscribe" in the header
We lead with the story that although Manchester City Council has stated it aims for Manchester to be Britain's greenest by 2010, it has actually slipped further down in the annual rankings of Forum for the Future (these rankings are under review, but a great leap forwards for our sunny city
would be a surprise...)
Our second story is on the “Climate Change Foundation”, a proposal that has so far received scant coverage in the mainstream press.
All the usual features are here too-
a Calendar bursting with events, including Sat 29th's Chomsky at 80, www.chomskyat80.org.uk
a Digest of local, national and global news (with more on the website)
Campaign updates “Read All About it” and other goodies.

A new range of small nuclear generators are being developed by corporations to provide local or even domestic power. The Observer published an article on this yesterday - without mention of the 'security detail' that Hyperion's website predicts will keep it safe.http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2008/nov/09/miniature-nuclear-reactors-los-alamos

Students Dying to Ditch Dirty Development

Students from the West Midlands participated in a die-in against the Royal Bank of Scotland at the Graduate Recruitment Fair at the NEC in Birmingham. Protesters then had to deal with the usual security and police disproporionate and ad-hoc overreaction to the action, which for some was their first protest.Economic and Ecological Collapse:An Ecosocialist solution

Will the UK Face a Natural Gas Crisis this Winter?
30-10-2008 14:10
In the second part of the series, I use a simulation approach to test the likely adequacy of natural gas supplies during the upcoming heating season. In these simulations, I use data from the UK Department of Business, Enterprise, and Regulatory Reform (BERR), UK National Grid, as well as information about recent UK Continental Shelf (UKCS) and Norwegian Continental Shelf (NCS) develpments. Based on what I refer to as the reference scenario, it seems likely that the UK will increasingly have to rely on Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) imports to secure adequate supplies.
Nine Percent: the natural annual rate of oil output decline
30-10-2008 13:55
The Financial Times has leaked the results of the International Energy Agency's long-awaited study of the depletion profiles of the world's 400 largest oilfields, indicating that, "Without extra investment to raise production, the natural annual rate of output decline is 9.1 per cent." http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/e5e78778-a53f-11dd-b4f5-000077b07658.htmlRichard Heinberg: Say Goodbye to Peak Oil
