This month the Zapatista Army for National Liberation (EZLN) released several communiques.about its delegation's trip to the capital of the Mexican Republic.

From the General Command of the EZLN, 24 Commandantes will leave Chiapas for Mexico City on February 25. The stated purpose is to "expound upon the virtues of the Cocopa's legislative proposal - which faithfully reflects the San Andres Accords - to the legislators of the Congress of the Union". The 'caravan' will cross through the lands of the states of Chiapas, Oaxaca, Puebla, Veracruz, Tlaxcala, Hidalgo, Quere'taro, Michoaca'n, the State of Mexico and Morelos, and ending in Mexico City.

Since 1994 the EZLN has been demanding that those governing recognize the rights and culture of indegenous peoples in Mexico. Already a delegation of between 200 and 300 Italians, groups from San Francisco (US), Switzerland, Argentina and France will be accompanying the EZLN delegation - some for the entire route.

WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM / WORLD SOCIAL FORUM Jan 27 2001


Despite a total ban on protests and a massive police mobilisation, thousands of protestors have succeeded in disrupting business as usual at the World Economic Forum in Davos. A demonstration took place in Davos itself, while key highways were blocked throughout Switzerland. A solidarity demo took place in Madrid, Spain.

Swiss authorities had done their 'best' to prevent any protest. The conference centre had been surrounded with barbed wire, and people were stopped on the streets and arrested almost arbitrarily. Many of those travelling to Davos were detained and turned back, amongst them Indymedia as well as mainstream media journalists. NGOs, such as Amnesty International, have protested against the massive repression.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the Atlantic, the World Social Forum was convening in Porto Alegre, Brazil. NGOs, social movements, unions, progressive scientists, and individuals representing social change organisations from all over the world were meeting in order to discuss and create viable, humane economic and social structures. Events included a 15,000 people strong demonstration in Porto Alegre and the occupation of the local Monsanto biotechnology farm.

NEXT WTO MEETING Jan 24 2001


Mike Moore, director-general of the World Trade Organisation (see picture) is currently looking for a place to stage the next WTO meeting later this year. The only problem is: After the last meeting in Seattle in November 1999 had led to mass protests and had ended in a complete disaster for the organisation, there aren't many volunteers. Chile has just announced it is no longer interested in hosting the meeting, which leaves the Persian Gulf state of Quatar the only contestant. The fact that Quatar is not exactly known as a fierce supporter of human rights may come in handy, as Mr Moore is likely to fear more large-scale protests. According to Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch, staging the meeting there would "send the signal that it's okay to build the global economy on a foundation of repression." A decision is expected within the next few weeks.

PROTESTS AT US PRESIDENTIAL INAUGURATION Jan 22 2001


Thousands of protesters have converged on Washington DC to express their anger at the inauguration of the right-wing 43rd President of the United States, George 'Dubya' Bush. Diverse groups representing environmental, anti-corporate, anti-racist and many other causes are demonstrating and taking direct action. Police communications have been jammed and roads have been blocked while African-American members of the US Congress have boycotted the ceremony. Police, supported by National Guard troops, are struggling to maintain control of the US capital. Protests are also taking place in other US cities and across the globe.

Since Seattle last year, the media has heralded the dawn of a new movement in Europe and America, epitomised by protests aimed at the WTO, IMF and the World Bank. However, this 'new movement', portrayed by the media as students and anarchists from the rich and prosperous global north, is just the tip of the iceberg. In the global south, a far deeper and wide-ranging movement has been developing for years, largely ignored by the media. This 'hidden' movement has a global reach and signals a deep unease at economic policies that keep the poor in poverty.

ANTI-GLOBALIZATION MOBILIZATION IN NICE Dec 5-7 2000


Thousands of people converged on the French town of Nice to show their anger about current EU policies and globalising capitalism, and to discuss alternatives to them. Protestors attempted to blockade the venue of the European Union summit where EU leaders gathered to hammer out the future of the block. Heavy clashes between police and protestors followed, as police bombarded activists with concussion grenades and tear gas. A Banque Nationale de Paris office was set alight.

BOLIVIA RISING Sep 24 2000


For more than a week Bolivia has been convulsed by waves of protests by peasants, coca growers, public school teachers and others. One key form of protest has been the blocking of major highways, effectively cutting off regions one from the other, and Bolivia from neighboring countries. At least two people were killed and over 10 wounded today in confrontation between Bolivian military and protesters near the community of Parotani, about 350 km from La Paz, Bolivia's capital, when government troops, under civilian cover, fired tear gas and live ammunition on protesters.

CLIMATE CONFERENCE IN THE HAGUE Nov 18 2000


More than five thousand protestors laid siege to climate change talks in The Hague. Calling for curbs on greenhouse gas emissions, activists built a sandbag wall at the venue to warn of the risk of flooding posed by global warming. Security officers forcibly removed some activists who gained entry to a room where an energy seminar was taking place. Check out the video.

Several demonstrations were held during the two weeks protests and the police responded with mass-arrests. Over 100 people were arrested at the Nuclear Walk of Shame on 22 November. Because of the extensive police presence, Greenpeace had decided not to take part in this particular protest.

WEF MEETING IN MELBOURNE Sep 11 2000


At 2pm Australian time on Monday September 11 it appears the blockade of the World Economic Forum at Crown Casino in Melbourne has been a success. About half of the 800 delegates to the conference have been prevented from entering the building and inside the feeling is a little tense. Apparently some delegates have refused to leave their hotel rooms to attempt running the blockade. Protesters are claiming victory in their efforts to "close down the WEF" For more information and coverage of resistance and the protests see Melbourne Indymedia and the S11 website.


In London around 30 people gathered on The Strand in a solidarity action with those protesting against the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Australia.

14000 Pounds bail demands for last S26 activist in Czech jail

The Dane Mads Traerup is the last of the known activists remaining in jail following demonstrations against economic globalization in Prague. Mads has been in jail since September 26th under allegations of assaulting a police officer. There is no evidence known to the public against him except for the testimony of 3 police officers. Numerous people have testified for his innocence. Judicial authorities have accepted a 14.000 Pounds bail for Mads. The Prague legal support team has paid 3500 Pounds of the bail, while Mads' parents have taken out a 11500 Pounds loan. There are currently 16 activists charged for mainly police assault and property destruction following the demonstrations, as well as 3 demonstrators who are still under investigation.

Kamil Olejnik was released on the November 22, one day after Czech and Polish authorities transferred him to a jail in Poland. On October 24, however, a Czech judge sentenced Kamil to 1 year in prison for assault on a police officer, following an expedited court case in which the defence has no right to present witnesses or testimony. Kamil's lawyer appealed the decision. Polish judicial officials dropped the charges against Kamil the day after he was released for lack of evidence. This points out the political nature of Czech judicial actions against anti-economic globalization demonstrators. The Czech state has thus attempted to bypass criticisms made by a global movement of the capitalist system by focusing on and criminalizing a small group of individuals.

Solidarity actions at the Czech embassy in London

Pickets outside London's Czech embassy

After pickets on Wednesday and Thursday, a third picket of the Czech Embassy in London took place on Friday 29th of September to demand the immediate release of all those arrested at the anti-IMF/WB protests in Prague. Activists blocked all four lanes of the road outside the embassy until police removed them. Also on Friday an activist met the Vice Consul of the Czech embassy to discuss reports of police brutality and torture of political activists in Czech prisons. Earlier on an IMC UK reporter had telephone contact with the British embassy in the Czech Republic.

At least 859 arrested, many mistreated by police

The OPH legal team was reporting on Thursday that there were at least 859 prisoners being held as a result of S26 actions. Police reports suggest that of those 859 more than 600 are Czech citizens. The numbers OPH have received are inconsistent. However, it seems clear that hundreds of foreigners have been arrested, but they make up less than half of the total arrests. Only 20 of the detainees have been charged. 30 people inside the jails have been denied food, water and sleep. The OPH legal team have reports of people having limbs broken and teeth knocked out. A Spanish woman was thrown out of the window of a police station. Her spine was broken in the fall. The police are claiming that "she fell over". There is clear evidence of torture by the police. Only on Thursday afternoon another 80 more people were arrested.

Czech Newspaper Accuses Police of Using Provocateurs

Police were probably involved in looting in the center of Prague on Tuesday, where the destruction of Mc Donalds took place. The organization of Citizens' Legal Observers (OPH) filed a charge against alleged agents yesterday. Using men in disguise during demonstrations is a common police practice. Policemen masked as anarchists walk in front of almost every mass action. However, it is illegal to use agents-provocateurs. But according to photographers and eyewitnesses OPH has at their disposal, this is exactly what happened on Tuesday. For example, observers have filmed a man smashing a McDonald's window and then walking away through a police cordon without any hassle. More

Thera are also some indios mapuche from Chile doing a sit-in. Anarchists from Poland, Belarus, a few from Prague. Once in a while the police speakers order to disperse but nobody bother it.

At 12pm police arrived at the IMC on Legerova Street in Prague, checking and recording indymedia journalists passport numbers and ID's as they enter and leave the IMC. It doesn't appear that they are attempting to enter the center. Police are also performing spot checks in the city, increasing the tension ahead of tomorrows main protests. The Czech legal observer team Obhanske Pravnm Hlmdky (OPH) are negotiating with police to stop these unlawful idendity checks.

Sunday 24

With IMF and World Bank delegates arriving and the talks on further economic globalisation starting, more and more activists were crossing the border. The Ya Basta train finally arrived in Prague at around 2am on Sunday after it was stopped at the Czech/Austrian border as 4 people on the train had been refused entry by Czech police. The train had started to make it's way to Prague after the 4 detainees were declared to be under the responsibility of diplomats of the Prague Italian embassy. The events probably were sped up by the fact that at 12 noon about 250 people had marched from the train station to the Interior Ministry where they had started a sit-down protest in solidarity with the protesters on the Ya Basta train. On Saturday a strong antifascist demonstration and an international trade union march showed two parts of the multi-faceted protest movement present in Prague. Meanwhile, at the counter summit people from all over the world were sharing their experiences with World Bank policies, and at the Convergence Center activists were preparing the blockade of the IMF/World Bank conference.

IMC Philadelphia reports from the U.S. Republican Party Convention July 30th - August 3rd. The Anti-Globalization Movement, barely nine months old in North America is now pushing the question of what politics really are.

On January 1 1994, the Zapatista Army for National Liberation (EZLN) took over several towns in the southernmost Mexican state of Chiapas - timed to coincide with the implementation of the NAFTA 'freetrade' agreement.

Since then, they have been demanding basic human rights and social justice for the indigenous and rural communities of the area. Autonomous communities have meanwhile been set up: which have organised education and health care; collectivized the land; and implemented a grassroots approach to direct democracy decision-making. Outside Chiapas, the Zapatistas are also known for their radical rejection of neoliberal capitalism, as well as for moving away from the traditional strategies of many past guerilla movements in Latin America.
