Peace Festival brings music & politics to heart of the city

Some of the many stalls at the Peace Festival
On Saturday the CND-organised Peace & Ecology Festival, in St John's Gardens behind St George's Hall, proved a great attraction for crowds of people lured away from the usual consumer madness that is Liverpool city centre on a Saturday. Read more >>

Stricken lender Northern Rock has attracted a buyer.

Otterspool Promenade Under Threat Again

On 28 September Liverpool Council plan to give-away a stretch of public open
space along Otterspool Promenade. This is part of the tree lined grass
embankment that runs along the coast from the Britannia Inn for about 1/2
mile between the Garden Festival site and the Promenade walkway. The
Executive Board meet at Millennium House at 9am next Friday 28th September
to approve the disposal and to include the land in the lease agreement with
Langtree McLean for their Festival Gardens development. Read more >>

What Does Democracy Really Mean In Preston?

A Preston councillor has asked questions about the democracy of decision making about key decisions affecting the future of Preston's Town Centre, and of the ecology of the River Ribble - but what does democracy really mean in Preston, when council officials, directly involved in the decisions affecting our future, are leaving our town like rats leaving a sinking ship? Another Construction Collapse in Capital of Culture City

As the city of Liverpool is frantically prepared for the Capital of Culture celebrations, workplace safety is bound to come a poor second to profit margins. This year has already seen a three fatalities on Merseyside construction sites, and though no-one has been killed in this latest incident, it looks very likely there will be more deaths before 1st January. Return Beatrice to Liverpool

Beatrice campaigning in Liverpool
Beatrice who was living in Liverpool was 'removed' to Cameroon on 28th August after being held in Yarls Wood detention camp for many weeks. Beatrice resisted being forced onto the plane but she has told us that she was very badly beaten and kicked by her two 'escorts'. Her condition was so bad that the Cameroonian authorities refused to acccept someone who was in such a bad state into their country and put her on a plane the same night on a flight back to the UK. She remains in Yarls Wood and has had her mobile taken from her and she is very unhappy with her legal representatives.

Leafleting at St Lukes at the top of Bold Street on Saturday 22nd September 1.30 - 2.30 for Beatrice and others, as sadly Beatrice's case is not exceptional, many others suffer from these racist immigration controls. Read more >>

Liverpool Conspiracy Evening

The third event in this opening week of Next To Nowhere was another great success (honestly, I would say if it wasn't; telling the truth is always a revolutionary act!). About twenty people discussed conspiracy theories - or 'alternative proposals' as I think we decided to call them - in a calm and respectful way. This was the first time I've ever seen that happen! It is possible! Read more >>

There's Next To Nowhere You Can Get Parties Like This...

It doesn't mean chaos y'know. Though if you'd seen the kitchen at 4am...
Next To Nowhere - Liverpool's new social centre - opened last night with the political party to end political parties. Over one hundred people danced and chatted long, long, long into the night, raising money for our exciting radical space while they were at it. Here are some pics, and sorry to the musicians whose names I've forgotten! Read more >>
