Numbers ever dwindling as they continue to slither into insignificance on the far right scene, the EDL turned up in Colchester to march against immigration, much like the National Front have done over the last few weeks. They even managed to muster an Uncle Tom oblivious to his own immigrant origins, however nobody can pretend they are not a spent force on the far right, the same tired and weary eccentic old faces dominating as the stalwarts continue to waste bus and train fares to their pointless demos.
Whereas the collective public sentiment has begun to move towards the plight of refugees in spite of an ever-present rightwing / UKIP / Tory right media onslaught using the (so-called) refugee crisis as a smokescreen for David Cameron's targetting of the UK's poorest citizens, the total and utter morons of the EDL continue to march to the beat of a different drum, hatred of the other, albeit in far smaller numbers than in recent months let alone years.
Losing ground to rival groups like the National Front and Britain First, the EDL's ageing inebriated footsoldiers have coagulated into a darkly comic parody of themselves, with ridiculous bufoons like the toothless "nazi punk" who wears a leather kilt, taking centre stage.
If only they could tone down the anti-refugee and anti-Muslim chants, what remains of the EDL would make a successful fringe comedy show. Instead of pissing on and castles, churches and making nazi salutes on War Memorials, they could be parading their manic nationalistic absurdities to packed-out stages of the Edinburgh Festival with silly haircuts, comic fashion sense, and gurning workshops. Think Rocky Horror crossed with Springtime for Hitler.
Shrek - AKA Dave Bolton could make a grand return with an an after-hours Vaudeville licentious full-on tattooed butt cheeks farce, cocaine-snorting, tent-shagging and all.
