Emily taken to the airport! – Phone blockade!

We’ve just heard that our friend Emily has been taken from Yarl’s Wood towards Heathrow…but it’s not to late to stop her flying! The flight is not due until 9:20pm, we think she is just taken early to be near the airport and she can be brought back! We’re therefore calling out today for a phone blockade. If you can, please spend just 5 mins calling EVA Airways London offices to ask them to intervene in Emily’s flight, as they are able to do. Please start calling from 11am.

The following phone numbers are used by EVA Air in London:

020 7380 8300
020 8745 7779

Please call to ask them questions such as:

Why are they insisting on removing Emily against her will?

Why would they take such action just before Christmas, ‘the season of goodwill’?

Do they not think that it is unfair to send people to an uncertain future, just for disobeying immoral orders?

Do they have little concern for fundamental human rights?

It’s also not to late to send emails, facebook and twitter messages to the company, please see below

Airline campaigning!

We’re now asking people to contact the airline that the Home Office has issued M.Y. with removal directions for. She has been booked on to EVA Airways flight BR068 from Heathrow, at 9:20pm on Monday 23rd December. We hope to persuade the airline not to take her and for her to be returned to Newport where she belongs.

Model letter

Please use the letter below as a model letter to edit and send as a fax or email to any (or all!) of the people listed directly below (please email them separately and send emails with the subject ‘F.A.O. EVA Air London Office’).

Dear Ms. Dos Santos,

I understand that Emily Y. is due to be removed from the UK against her will on Monday 23rd December on EVA Air flight BR068, at 9:20pm from Heathrow.

I am writing to ask you to please intervene to stop this from happening.

Emily came to the UK seeking sanctuary after refusing to be an intelligence officer for the Taiwanese government as she became morally uncomfortable with the work she was asked to carry out.

The trauma, distress and despair she has suffered, through being removed from her life in Newport, and the prospect of being deported to Taiwan against her will, led to her twice being admitted to hospital, both times under the custody of Gwent Police, acting in place of UKBA/Home Office.

There has been great support for Emily, demonstrated both at local level, within her community in Newport, and internationally, with much media interest. A press conference was even called see Apple Daily reports:
 http://tinyurl.com/mymuststay1

 http://tinyurl.com/mymuststay2

In Taiwan she could face an unduly long prison sentence, if not torture, or capital punishment.

See: The hidden face of Taiwan, the joint report of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and Taiwan Association for Human Rights (TAHR) carried out last November and presented to the 10 person international committee of Human Rights experts investigating the implementation of Taiwanese government human rights policy in February-March this year for information relating to Emily’s case. This report clearly indicates that the British and Taiwanese systems are not comparable while the situation is critical for her – as being perceived as having committed ‘treason’ by refusing to carry out her duties – the FIDH/TAHR report notes that treason is counted among those crimes subject to the death penalty in Taiwan.

Emily Y. is a dynamic and capable person who has made a positive contribution to her community and would continue to do so. The fact that 25 people turned up to the police station to support her, and that a further demonstration of support occured as she arrived at Colnbrook detention centre, demonstrates the strength of feeling and support for her. She must be returned to Newport to her friends, and where she belongs.

Please do not allow Emily Y. to be forcibly removed. I am aware that airlines are able to exercise discretion about carrying unwilling deportees and are not obliged to do so. I therefore implore you to reconsider EVA Air’s position on this matter.
Yours sincerely

Dear Rt. Hon. Theresa May MP
Re: MY Home Office Ref: M1460452/002

I write concerning the above named individual who is currently being held at Yarl’s Wood IRC.
M.Y. came to the UK seeking sanctuary after refusing to be aa intelligence officer for the Taiwanese government as she became morally uncomfortable with the work she was asked to carry out. She was taken from her home, here in Newport, on the morning of Tuesday 10th December 2013 to Newport Central Police Station where she became quite ill and was subsequently removed to a detention centre after being held there for 105 hours.

We are concerned that if M.Y. is returned to Taiwan, she faces an uncertain future with regards to the punishment she will receive, as this punishment could be unduly severe or harsh. We do not want the British Government to take that risk.

M.Y. is a much loved and popular member of the community here in Newport, South Wales. She made lots and lots of friends and was involved in all sorts of community groups and activities.
She attended her local church, volunteered in the Red Cross office here in Newport and also volunteered as a translator for a local charity and, somehow, also found time to volunteer in the Oxfam bookshop.
In addition to this, she also attended an access to nursing college course and also a course in professional cookery.

I request that you do not attempt to remove M.Y. from the UK and that you return her immediately to Newport amongst the community where she belongs.

I look forward to your reply.

Thank you.

Yours sincerely

Dear Jessica Morden MP

Re: MY Home Office Ref: M1460452/002

I write concerning our friend, M.Y. (name withheld for her safety) who is from Chepstow Road, Newport, and is currently being held at Yarl’s Wood IRC.

M.Y. came to the UK seeking sanctuary after refusing to be an intelligence officer for the Taiwanese government as she became morally uncomfortable with the work she was asked to carry out. She was taken from her home, in East Newport, on the morning of Tuesday 10th December 2013 to Newport Central Police Station where she became quite ill and was subsequently removed to a detention centre after being held there for 105 hours. When she was removed from the police station on Saturday afternoon, there were some 25 local friends there, at short notice, to try and support her as she was taken away from Newport. We asked to visit her, just for 5 minutes, but we were not allowed.

We are concerned that if M.Y. is returned to Taiwan, she faces an uncertain future with regards to the punishment she will receive, as this punishment could be unduly severe or harsh, a risk she shouldn’t have to take.

M.Y. is a much loved and popular member of the community here in Newport. She made lots and lots of friends and was involved in all sorts of community groups and activities, as you may know.
She attended her local church on Chepstow Road, volunteered in the Red Cross office on Lower Dock Street, and also volunteered as a translator at the Welsh Refugee Council and, somehow, also found time to volunteer with Oxfam.
In addition to this, she also attended an access to nursing course at Nash College and also a course in professional cookery at Cross Keys.

I request that you do all in your power to ensure that M.Y. is not removed from the UK, to face an uncertain future in Tawain, so that she can be returned to Newport amongst the community where she belongs.

I look forward to your reply.

Thank you.

Yours sincerely
