In Vancouver, Canada there is an area of 1000 sq ft where it is legal to shoot heroin, or any kind of illegal drug. Fresh from Supreme Court victory, hear the founders of InSite, North America's only supervised injection site, talk about how they fought an antagonistic Conservative government and won the right to stay open...and they're hoping to see the same thing happen in the UK.
Liz Evans and Dan Small from the PHS Community Services Society will be in London on July 12 at 1 pm at St. Martin in-the-Fields and in Bristol on July 19 at 1 pm at Trinity Arts Centre. These are free public presentations on the Story of North America's only supervised injection site, InSite. The PHS Community Services Society, based in Vancouver, Canada, provides basic services from housing and emergency shelters, nutrition, banking, a medical and dental clinic, detox and harm reduction services including a managed alcohol program, needle exchange, alcohol and drug treatment programs and operates North America's first and only safe injection site, InSite.
Liz Evans from Vancouver, Canada, a Psychiatric Nurse, is the Executive Director and founder of the PHS Community Services. For her work in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, Liz is a recipient of the RNABC as the Health Advocate of the year, she was named one of Canada's Top 40 under 40, received the Denise Leblanc Memorial Award by the BC Non Profit Housing Association, and the Queen's Golden Jubilee Award for Community Services. Liz will talk about the founding and the struggles to keep our safe injection site, a service that save lives, tax dollars and encourages people to use detox, to remain open.
Dr. Dan Small is a Director and co-founder of the PHS Community Services Society and an advocate for a comprehensive evidence approach to dealing with the issue of addiction reduction, social policy and justice. He played a lead role in the establishment of InSite and its victory to remain open. Dr. Dan Small, PhD, M.Phil, is a University of British Columbia Medical Anthropology Professor and Finance Chair of the Medical Council of Canada.
