IN THE LATE 90s, DRC was gripped by a war that was the bloodiest conflict since WW2. It was not a 'civil' war but an international one pulling in neighbouring states arming rebel groups and involving Western multinationals and states who supported different sides in attempts to control the mines and minerals of DRC (Coltan a vital component is mobile phones is produced in the Congo). During the war it is estimated that 5 million people died.
