Sanaa, Yemen - Hundreds of protesters were hurt in Yemen late Saturday when government forces launched a crackdown in the capital Sanaa.
An eyewitness told the German Press Agency dpa that 10 people were injured after authorities used live ammunition, tear gas, water cannons and batons to disperse the crowd. Another group of 15 protesters were seriously wounded while laying on the ground and were taken by police to undisclosed location, according to an eyewitness.
The Yemen Post, citing medical authorities, said as many as 800 people were injured or being treated for tear gas inhalation.
Anti-regime protesters took to the streets in the southern port city of Aden at the moment of the attack condemning the use of violence.
The Ministerial Council of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is holding an meeting Sunday in Saudi capital, Riyadh, to address the situation in Yemen, according to the state-run news agency, SABA.
The meeting comes within the framework of a series of efforts by the Gulf member states to help Yemen settle the current crisis, said a statement issued Saturday by the GCC.
Yemeni authorities shut down Al-Jazeera's media office in Sanaa on Saturday after withdraw its reporters credentials. A number of reporters have been attacked, intimidated or kidnapped by Yemen authorities despite international warning against targeting journalists.
