Microfinance represents financial services for the poor. Microfinance institutions should follow the social enterprise ideal of education and equality for those below the poverty line - it should enable them to lift themselves from poverty.
There are 1.4 billion people under the poverty line ($1.25 a day) and a quarter, 300 million live in China, particularily in Rural areas. On Monday 7th March, at 7pm in the Wills memorial building we will be celebrating the Launch of Wokai Bristol. Wokai is an online platform that enables you to help these people through Microfinance.
If you are interested in coming along to hear more about Microfinance, Wokai Bristol or to network with local entrepreneurs and professionals, please RSVP you free place here: www.wokai.org/events
I believe in innovative solutions to solve the World's problems
It for this reason that when I was told that in fact there are 300 million in China below the poverty line that I jumped at the chance of getting involved with an international organisation called Wokai, an online platform that connects those in rural China living on less than $1.25 to those in the West.
The concept of these online platforms have been a massive success in America. Kiva, a similar concept to Wokai, is now operating in at least 53 countries. However, due to the structure of its business model it cannot be involved in countries like China - this is where Wokai comes in.
Myself and my partner Ziwei Fan are now running a Bristol based arm of Wokai. As such we are having a party to launch the establishment of this chapter on Monday 7th March at 7pm in the Wills memorial building, University of Bristol.
If you are interested in finding out more then please book a free place at www.wokai.org/events. In attendance will be the deputy Lord Mayor of Bristol, professionals and local entrepreneurs and wine and nibbles will be available.
We hope to see you there - otherwise please check www.wokai.org to find out more about this organisation.
It great to finally be proactive towards finding an innovative solution for the World's poor! As the old proverb goes: if you give a man a fish you feed him for a day, if you give a man a rod you feed him for a lifetime
