Alice: Innocent victim of the Institute of Neurology
INSTITUTE OF NEUROLOGY QUEEN SQUARE, WC1N 3BG
To mark International Animal Rights Day on Saturday 11th December, campaigners from Greater London Action for Animals (GLAA) will be holding a Victorian-style funeral protest at the Institute of Neurology primate laboratories in London.
The Institute of Neurology, part of University College London, has been exposed on two separate occasions and the demonstration is set to draw attention towards not only the animals killed there, but the archaic nature of animal research. Anybody walking past would not realise what is going on behind the cold, grey walls of this barbaric laboratory, situated in Central London.
Primates are routinely tortured in experiments inside the IoN, with electrodes implanted into their brains, forced to live in small laboratory cages - a far cry from their natural habitat. Monkeys repeated circling through stress and psychological damage was documented inside the labs. Cats are also used inside the establishment, which has previously led to a temporary suspension of the facility's license to experiment on animals and the animals' spinal cords were cut or damaged.
The group plans to hold the Service in Memory of Alice, a young primate who was subjected to experiments involving starving her and attaching electrodes to her brain. But the demonstration is for all animals that have died or are waiting to die inside IoN right now.
