In an article in last weekend's Sunday Express, Charles Pickering was accused of causing suffering to greyhounds and keeping them in appalling conditions at his ZigZag Kennels at Dunholme, near Lincoln, following an investigation by international greyhound protection group Greyhound Action.

Greyhound Action's UK Co-ordinator, Tony Peters, said: "We want the RSPCA and West Lindsey Council to take action as soon as possible to close down this cruel establishment and for the dogs to be handed over to greyhound rescue organisations, so they can be found loving homes.

"Sadly the suffering of the greyhounds at ZigZag Kennels is just the tip of the iceberg as far as the dog racing industry is concerned.

"Latest research indicates that over 12,000 greyhounds, bred for racing on British tracks, are 'put down' every year, after failing to make the grade as racers or when their 'careers' on the tracks come to an end.

"An RSPCA report on greyhound racing has stated that 'at least 20 greyhounds a day - either puppies which do not make the track, or retired dogs aged three or four - simply disappear, presumed killed'.

"In addition, thousands of injuries to greyhounds, many of them serious, occur every year in Britain. The main reason for this is that the shape of the tracks, with fast straights leading into tight bends, creates a very dangerous environment for dogs to run in.

"A similar situation in the USA has led to ten states banning commercial greyhound racing in the past twenty years, and we want the British government to do the same.

"In the meantime, we are calling on the public not to attend dog tracks or bet on greyhound racing, so his appalling death-industry fades away through lack of financial support."
