Scottish Borders celebrates World Environment Day

A new group, “The Green Fork –Scottish Borders”, focusing on healthy, low-carbon food will be launched with a free talk and workshop on World Environment Day, Saturday 5th June at the Tweedbank Community Centre, Tweedbank from 12noon-2pm. There will be free compassionate-living guides focusing on ethical and compassionate living in Tweedbank and lots more free literature to be taken away!
The event is designed to introduce everyone to a more ethical lifestyle, with free food and tips on how to make simple and practical changes that can have a real impact on your own health and the health of the environment. There will be an emphasis on local and community based initiatives that everyone who is interested in reducing their carbon footprint by eating healthily and locally can get involved with. Ongoing support will be offered through a local “meetup” group.
Whilst many people are now concerned about climate change and choose energy efficient light bulbs, drive hybrid cars and install solar panels, etc we ignore a simple step we can take every day, changing our food habits. A key aim of the event is to raise awareness of the disastrous effect of a meat-based diet on the climate and calls on the Scottish Government to take immediate steps to recognize and reduce the impact of the livestock industry on our environment.
Donna Hanson, co-ordinator of the campaign in the Borders, said, ‘According to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Agency (FAO), the livestock and meat industry accounts for 18% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. That is more than comes from the world’s entire transportation sector. So a change in our eating habits can make a contribution to necessary reductions of emissions. A plant-based, wholefood diet is the single most effective step anyone can take to reduce animal suffering, improve your health and protect the planet. Such a diet has been scientifically shown to reduce, and in some cases even reverse, diseases like diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, cancer, obesity and other auto-immune diseases And the food is wonderful, too! What other diet can offer so much?”
