MORE ABOUT THE SEMINAR: Terrorists and terrorism have often been depicted in terms of absolute and antithetical opposites, civilisation versus barbarism, democracy versus terrorism, 'us' versus 'them'. This talk will look at some of the faces of terrorism in various historical episodes, and examine how different representations of terrorist violence have overlapped with counterinsurgency propaganda to form an image of the 'universal terrorist', whose underlying characteristics and intentions are perceived as broadly similar.
