The recent daylight attack on Sri Lankan cricketers in the liberal city of Lahore highlights the current challenges that Pakistan faces.
Pakistan's role as a key frontline state in the global war on terrorism underpins the current crisis, with the US making no secret of the fact that it sees the growing insurgency in Pakistan as its greatest security challenge.
All of this is being played out against a background of political turmoil and economic stagnation with Zardari and his civilian government seemingly incapable of tackling problems faced by Pakistani peoples.
South Asian Alliance has invited Ayesha Siddiqa to provide an insider's account of the situation; to comment on the rise of extremism in Pakistan, the approach that Obama's administration is taking and to explore the effects of the Pakistani crisis on political stability in South Asia.
Ayesha Siddiqa is a renowned Pakistani analyst, columnist and author with a detailed knowledge of political and military affairs in Pakistan. She was previously Director of Naval Research with the Pakistan Navy, a Ford Fellow and a Pakistan Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. She is the author of Military Inc.: Inside Pakistan's Military Economy, a book which caused much controversy in Pakistan when it was first published.
