Time Banking Comes to Sneinton!
Sneinton Time Bank | 11.03.2009 18:54
2009 is the start of something new and exciting for Sneinton – the area’s first time bank project has recently been launched.
Time banks are schemes where people share their time and skills with others and receive help back in
return. There is no money involved – the only currency is time! For every hour a member spends helping someone else they earn a time credit. One hour's work equals
one credit no matter what skills are used - all skills have equal value. Time credits are banked at the local
time bank and members can draw on their credits when there is something they need help with.
The scheme is being run by local Charity, TRACS Neighbourhood Centre, 60 Sneinton Hollows. Nottingham.
Membership is FREE to anyone who lives, works or volunteers in Sneinton and also to organisations.
The sorts of skills that can be offered and requested through a time bank project are many and varied. Even
people who consider themselves not to be very skilful have things they can offer to the project. Here are
some examples of the sorts of skills that people have offered and received at other time banks:
Waiting for trades people, delivering letters, DIY, cycle repairs, gardening, dog walking, clothes repairs, tie
dying, computer skills, local knowledge, listening, lifts to hospital, teaching, filling in forms, organising events,
shopping, design work etc.
In the current climate of the credit crunch and with unemployment on the rise, the launch of the Sneinton
time bank comes at a good time. David, one of the time bank coordinator’s who is getting the scheme off the
ground explains:
“There are lots of people who are not in work at the moment and they don’t have the money to pay for all of
the things they need doing. We hope that this project can help alleviate the financial pressures as well as
helping individuals to expand their networks of friends and acquaintances and strengthen the bonds of
community."
