The next hearing is on the 12th March. Although they will already have drafted the plans, applying pressure before this crucial hearing (at which they will be making a presentation) will disrupt the process. If permission is denied or the decision postponed, CgMs will remain a vital player in the realisation of the project.
THE BICESTER DETENTION CENTRE
The Home Office's currently proposes to construct a 800-bed all male detention centre on ex-MOD land in Piddington, near Bicester. If built, it is reported that it would be the largest detention centre in Europe. This is the second time the govt. has sought to build one near Bicester, the first proposal being abandoned in 2005 - apparently due NIMBYs in uproar. The Home Office is trying to appease them this time by claiming that the centre will be the equivalent of a category c prison.
WHY CgMs?
CgMs have a history of exploiting the asylum process. They advised the government on the construction of Yarl's Wood and the conversion of Dungavel from a prison into a detention centre for migrants. They have in the past been contracted to advise on the development of numerous other UK detention centres.
