Pets becoming popular among the middle class

New Delhi, Feb 8 (PTI) With higher incomes, less children, and a shift from joint to nuclear families, Indians are finding the benefits of having an unconditional, loving companion.
"The number of pet owners is increasing day by day and most of them being the ballooning middle class," says P Choudhary, a veterinary doctor,.
He estimates, around 85-95 per cent of pet owners are upper and upper-middle class, while just 5-15 per cent are from the lower economic bracket.
According to India International Pet Trade Fair (IIPTF) statistics, "There are an estimated 3.6 million pet dogs in the six major cities alone".
Like with many commodities of late, the middle class is having an increasingly broader selection of pets to choose from. Dogsindia.Com, a website with the purpose of "bringing together all dog enthusiasts in India," lists over 100 dog breeds.
The list includes traits of each specific breed, such as history, physical facts, and temperament. And for those who are not so passionate about dogs, there are plenty of other animals to choose from in the pet industry.
IIPTF's website claims "cat, bird, fish, reptile and rodent ownership is also growing." PTI
