Market Tavern welcomes drinkers from the bookfair
On Saturday 20th November 1869, a meeting of delegates in the Market Tavern in Durham Market Square met and established Durham Miners’ Mutual Association. This new union came to life at a fortunate period of history as Durham coal was entering an unprecedented period of prosperity.
Almost exactly 139 years later the Manager of the Market Tavern has agreed to host visitors, readers and booksellers from Durham’s 2nd Working Class Bookfair. This event is again sponsored by the Durham and North East region N.U.M to continue the fine traditions of the working class movement.
The range of local groups invited includes; political groups, Trade Unions, community groups, campaign groups, and history societies.
T said "The only problem with the vibrant Miners Gala is that it isn't often enough, everybody goes to it, and this bookfair will hopefully fill the gap somewhat".
