presents:

Stratford-upon-Avon Climate Change Film Festival

25th Nov - 4th Dec 2008

www.stratfordfairtradetown.org.uk/climatechangefilmfestival.html

Brought to you by Cans – Climate Action Network Stratford – this November will see the arrival of Stratford’s first-ever climate change film festival, in association with Oxfam.
On four nights, spread over two weeks, this cinematic extravaganza aims to educate, stimulate and facilitate discussion, action and debate on the biggest challenge facing all of us right now – climate change.

The programme of showings is as follows:

Tues 25th Nov: Sisters on the Planet (apx 30 mins) at Stratford Oxfam branch, Wood Street, Stratford-upon-Avon
19.00-21.00
Climate change is already having a disproportionate impact on people in developing countries, and it’s hitting women hardest. Sisters on the Planet shows what effects climate change is having on women. Please visit the Oxfam shop to collect tickets and avoid disappointment on the night.

Thu 27th Nov: Power of Community – How Cuba Survived Peak Oil (apx 50 mins) at Stratford College, Alcester Road, Stratford-upon-Avon
19.00-21.00
When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba’s economy went into a tailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half — and food by 80 percent — people were desperate. This film tells how Cubans transitioned from a highly mechanized, industrial agricultural system to one using organic methods of farming and local, urban gardens. A panel of local representatives from a range of political parties will head the debate at the college. Please enter college through reception.

Mon 1st Dec: Pura Vida? (apx 30 mins) at Stratford College
19.00-21.00
Pura Vida? exposes the devastating effects that agrochemicals used on Costa Rica's pineapple and banana plantations have on workers, communities and the environment. The film is supported by Stratford Fairtrade Town Steering Group.

Thu 4th Dec: The End of Suburbia: Oil Depletion and the Collapse of the American Dream (apx 80 mins) at Stratford College
19.00-21.00
The End of Suburbia explores the American way of life and its prospects as the planet approaches a critical era and as global demand for fossil fuels begins to outstrip supply. World oil peak and the inevitable decline of fossil fuels are upon us now, scientists and policy makers argue in this documentary. The consequences of inaction in the face of this global crisis are enormous.

Notes:
• Cans is a coalition of grassroots organisations in the Stratford district who share the common goal of tackling man-made climate change. They include Oxfam, Stratford Fairtrade Town, Amnesty International Stratford branch and Friends of the Earth Stratford branch.
