Tug-of-War
People not cars
Even the IMF and World Bank acknowledge that the rapid expansion of agrofuels has been a significant factor in the dramatic increase in food prices over the past year. These price rises have led to around a hundred million people being pushed into poverty, making it essential that we tackle this issue immediately.
In addition to this the rapid expansion of the palm oil industry to produce agrofuels is driving a wave of deforestation in countries such as Indonesia which is producing enormous carbon emissions and worsening the outlook for climate stability.
Campaigners are calling for an immediate end to the expansion of agrofuel production and in the UK for the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation - which forces the inclusion of agrofuels into all fuels - to be suspended. Immediate action is needed to put the interests of people above those of cars.
