Still Here, Still Fighting - Campaigns Stepping up the Pressure

Hicham Yezza
"Hicham Yezza's deportation, set for Sunday June 1st, was stopped due to Judicial review and the case is with the HO's legal representatives now. Meanwhile, Hicham has been forcibly moved to Dover. Whilst awaiting the outcome of the review support from many quarters is still pouring in and staff and students at the university have been involved in pressing the university to intervene more positively with the HO to secure his release. Round-table discussions and a meeting at which Moazzam Begg spoke have taken place this week, and the university and town are united in outrage at this case, which we are more determined than ever to win." Amdani Juma had his removal deferred until Tuesday 10th June
"As it stands Amdani is now due to be deported on Tuesday evening 10th June. Liam Byrne called Amdani's MP Alan Simpson in for a meeting. Simpson reported that Byrne is going to look into the case again. In the meantime there was one of the biggest demonstrations Nottingham has seen in recent years in the town centre on Saturday 31st May. Around 300 people gathered to make known our message that Amdani must stay. Even though the Simpson/Byrne meeting gives a ray of hope we are still calling on people to contact the Home Office etc. For frequent updates, model letters etc.
His campaign group are going to the Home Office today and they are going to read the roll call of organisations that have signed his online petition in an official capacity. There has been television and radio coverage of the demonstrations and the Campaign Group have started what they are calling a Count Down protest to try and get more publicity and signed up interest. Letters are still being sent to the Home Office by national and community organisations in support of Amdani and, so far, 1,719 people have signed the petition.
Amdani collapsed in detention on Wednesday and he was later assessed as collapsing with stress."
We endorse the Allow Amdani Juma to stay in UK Petition to Home Office

Ivory Coast
The Federation of Students of Cote d'Ivoire (FESCI) is the focus for a report on human rights abuses published by Human Rights Watch in May 2008. The report focuses on the past role of FESCI as a political mob for hire. In December 2007 FESCI elected a new leadership team who have tried to refocus the work of the students' union on educational matters rather than national politics. There has been a considerable reduction in the cases of abuse and intimidation by students on the wider population since the appointment of the new FESCI president. There does, however, remain a risk that politicians will attempt to mobilise FESCI support during the electoral process.

Zimbabwean generals have 'taken Robert Mugabe's power'
Zimbabwe's generals have mounted a "military coup by stealth", reducing President Robert Mugabe to a "figurehead", a senior western diplomat said. The tight circle of "securocrats", who sit on the Joint Operations Command (JOC) committee, are now believed to be in day-to-day charge of Zimbabwe's government. They ensured Mr Mugabe did not step down after his defeat in the presidential election's first round in March and are now masterminding a campaign of terror to suppress the opposition Movement for Democratic Change and guarantee victory for Mr Mugabe in the June 27 run-off."
