EU directive on immigration to be voted

A new DIRECTIVE to be voted BY THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT on the 20th of May legitmises the DETAINMENT OF IMMIGRANTS IN AN IRREGULAR SITUATION IN DETENTION CENTERS FOR UP TO 18 MONTHS.
The proposed directive includes the following measures:
1.Extension of the maximum period of detainment for immigrants who have committed the administrative violation of residing irregularly in European territory to up to 18 months.
2.Allowing migrants, in the absence of available detention centers, to be held in prisons, albeit in separate units.
3.Internment of minors.
4.A ban on re-entry for five years following expulsion from the EU.
This directive legitimizes the privation of liberty to persons who have committed no crime. This is contrary to the democratic principles of European countries, and a further regression with respect to the fulfillment of immigrants’ rights.
What is being proposed is an increase in the confinement of immigrant men and women in centers that have been repeatedly denounced for their poor health conditions, for their abuse of detainees, and for their lack of transparency, clear criteria for their regulation, and information. These situations have been denounced throughout Europe on numerous occasions.
