Independent Media Center - Istanbul (Indymedia Istanbul) was initiated by a group of people in January 2003. In the mission statement of Indymedia Istanbul it is mentioned that:
The mainstream and dominant media cartels provide false/incorrect or imperfect information/knowledge/data by distorting many realities according to the status quo which the sovereigns of the world and the countries are adherent.
This initiative aims to organize its own information network without disregarding the information resources both in Turkey and abroad, and to make its voice to be heard by the masses in Turkey and abroad -despite that the internet is still a media tool which has a limited access for many people.
The website has aimed and still working to be against the destructive effects of all corporate media distortions, and to convey the information according to formula of 'what, why, how, where, when and by whom'.
Independent Media Center - Istanbul (Indymedia Istanbul) is a medium for the people who cannot utter their voice through dominant media tools. For last five years Istanbul Indymedia has continued to work without compromising any of these principles. Now the access to the site has been banned.
Censorship of Indymedia is being attempted. But Indymedia will not be silenced. The prosecutors of the Turkish Republic have not yet learnt that censorship of the internet is technically impossible. Indymedia continues its publishing.
Circumvention of the current ban is very easy, and Indymedia activists are working with lawyers on getting it overturned.
