The campaign to Free Freddie Roberts was a part of the Uhuru Movement's strategy to put the interests of the African working class back in the forefront of political struggle in Oakland, California in the 1980s, after the military defeat of the Black Power movement of the 1960s. In this presentation, Chairman Omali explains the significance of Oakland as the birthplace of the Black Panther Party and the effects of COINTELPRO (the FBI's counterintelligence program) and neo-colonialism in setting back the African community's ability to continue the independence struggle to its victorious conclusion.
