WASHINGTON, Jul. 31, 2007 (Business Wire) -- At 12:01 this morning FreedomWorks launched a straw poll to gauge how GOP candidates are faring among fiscal conservative voters. The poll is the first of its kind conducted by a free-market issue advocacy group to specifically target economic conservatives. Indeed, as social conservatives have generated a great deal of focus within the national debate on issues like abortion and gay marriage, FreedomWorks, a grassroots organization dedicated to lower taxes, less government, and more freedom, wants to know who limited government advocates support in the race for '08.
The straw poll was opened up by an email to FreedomWorks members late last night, and over 2,000 votes were counted by 9:00AM. The poll is available at www.FreedomWorks.org/strawpoll/, and will remain open until the straw poll closes at 11:59pm on Thursday, August 2nd.
FreedomWorks President Matt Kibbe commented:
'Many national polls are based on 800 or 900 likely voters. FreedomWorks had 1300 votes registered by 8:00AM and we anticipate over 4,000 total votes by Thursday. We are taking care with a confirmation process that each email address is valid and can only be used once. I'm pleased we can offer this platform to fiscal conservative activists to make their opinions heard at this stage of the campaign.'
FreedomWorks Chairman Dick Armey added:
'Our straw poll is a good gauge of how candidates look to the fiscally conservative, limited government base. These are the folks that felt let down by the massive spending and expansion of government in recent years and their participation and turnout in the election in 2008 will be a critical factor is deciding who will be President. Candidates that poll well should be pleased that their message is getting across to economic conservative activists.'
The straw poll is an early part of FreedomWorks' overall 2008 voter education effort. FreedomWorks activists have already intercepted candidates in key primary states. In addition, activists have been passing out the FreedomWorks 2008 Presidential Candidate Survey to get candidates on the record on key issues such as regulation, entitlement reform and taxes.
FreedomWorks Chairman Dick Armey has personally visited with most of the GOP candidates in recent moths to discuss how the big ideas of the Freedom Agenda made conservatives successful in the 1990's.
FreedomWorks will also sponsor a straw poll on the Democratic field in mid-August.
