11 July Meeting: Detention Without Trial: Lives in Limbo in Britain
CAMPACC | 27.06.2007 15:09 | Repression | Terror War | London
The speakers, Gareth Peirce (prominent human rights lawyer), Muddassar Arani (who defended many so-called terrorist suspects), Moazzem Begg (former Guantanamo Bay detainee), Dr Kamal Helbawy (prominent Muslim scholar and consultant on Islamic affairs), Shami Chakrabati (director of liberty), Mouloud Sihali (former detainee) among others, will also draw links between control orders, detentions, and other anti-terrorism measures – in particular, how extending pre-charge detention and the proposed new 'stop and question' powers will intensify the climate of fear, especially for Muslim communities.
The organisers are aiming for a large community audience, where experts and those who have experienced illegal detention can share their experiences and discuss strategies to counter the growing infringement of individual liberties and human rights.
Detention Without Trial: Lives in Limbo in Britain is co-sponsored by the London Muslim Centre and supported by Haldane Society of Socialist Lawyers, Peace and Justice in East London, Muslim Safety Forum, Islamic Human Rights Commission, The 1990 Trust and Islamic Forum Europe.
The meeting will be held at the London Muslim Centre, 46 Whitechapel Road, London E1 (Nearest tube: Aldgate East and Whitechapel) on Wednesday 11 July, 2007, 6pm-9pm. Admission is free.
