MAYDAY 07 - Camberwell Squatted Centre in Court but unbowed!!!
black frog | 22.04.2007 00:03 | Culture | Free Spaces | Social Struggles | London
So… the Squat Centre at 192 Warham Street, Camberwell, has received
court
papers… The owners of the building, so called, are seeking possession
of
the place, taking us to Lambeth County Court…on Tuesday May 1st! Yes,
Mayday! Well we weren’t going to work that day anyway…
arguments,
hopefully we will stave off eviction for a while… Meanwhile we are
continuing to use the space as much as we can, and carrying on with a
lively program of events. We may get evicted, sooner or later, but we
will
sing dance and create resistance here, for as long as the space is
under
our control. And then we will occupy somewhere else! A trundly
juggernaut
of energy, interest, ideas, and lovely people has been built up, and we
believe we can carry this on even if we have to find another place. In
the
meantime we urge everyone to get on down here if you can, support
events
that are happening, create your own.
TALKING OF MAYDAY
Some of us at the Camberwell Squat Centre have been talking for a while
about holding a Mayday event; our discussions have focused on uniting
the
idea of International Workers Day with an old style South London Mayday
fest with a Maypole (a little modified to address the alienated social
system we face today)… We are calling a Picnic/mini-Festival on mayday
itself, in Kennington Park, the old Kennington Common, common land and
a
gathering place for rowdy mobs, radical crowds, and self-organised
entertainment for centuries… We are still working on ideas, but we hope
to
have a maypole to dance around, and suggest people bring musical
instruments, weird and colourful costumes, food and drink to share… 2pm
at
the Squat, procession to Kennington park for Picnic at 3pm.
