Marsh harrier numbers soaring

HICKLING A count of 83 marsh harriers at Hickling in the Norfolk Broads has been reported by the BirdGuides online information service, a remarkable comeback for a bird of prey that, in 1971, had one nesting pair in Britain. In the 19th century they were wiped out by gamekeepers and egg and stuffed-bird collectors. Numbers recovered thanks to legal protection but then declined because of the use of pesticides, since banned. The number of marsh harriers wintering in Britain also reflects the milder climate.
