after three and a half years and lots and lots of legal argument it turns out that police in the uk do NOT have the right to turn people away from a demonstration to prevent any anticipated breach of the peace that is not imminent. nor can they kidnap people on buses... and they shouldn't even make out that someone not giving their name and address is therefore suspicious because as the law lord put it, this could just be traditional british bloody mindedness.
