Tonight's Liverpool Echo article - 'Cops on Red Alert' - is whipping up controversy where there was none before, over plans by Merseyside TUC, Stop The War Coalition and Liverpool Friends of Palestine to protest at Liverpool FC's Champions League match with Israeli side Maccabi Haifa.
The protest/leafletting against Israel's war on Lebanon and Palestine has gradually been planned over the last week, having first been proposed on the Merseyactivist internet group. Over the weekend, the TUC's Alec McFadden approached the police for permission. Today, the Echo's story - 'Cops on Red Alert' (

The right to peaceful protest was always supposed to be a sacred democratic right. New Labour might have banned it around Westminster, but it is still allowed in Anfield. The Echo have got their retaliation in first, and painted anyone who opposes the actions of the Israeli state the colour of danger and blood. And Liverpool FC, obviously.
