After the talk there were speakers from a Roma Gypsy community in Norfolk, and from the local Smithy Fen irish traveller community. They spoke of making links being an important thing to change the situation. The present situation being constant harassment by locals and anti-traveller campaigns by newspapers such as the Sun and the Cambridge Evening News. Where, in a recent case, a 15 year old traveller boy was beaten to death in Liverpool in a racist attack, but the killers were only convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 18 months in prison.
Tom Woodcock, from Unite Against Fascism, spoke in detail about the Cambridge Evening News coverage and the way it covers traveller issues. It constantly quotes the South African man who is practically the sole member of the Cottenham Residents Association. It has inflammatory headlines, and links other issues in a deliberately confusing way.
The talk ended with the speakers asking people to find positive ways to engage with the local paper to try to effect a change in their editorial policy.
